Supported and Independent Living

We offer you a number of services to help you keep your independence and stay in your home.  We also provide accommodation that has been designed to make life a little easier and more secure for you.  If we cannot provide what you need to allow you to live independently we will tell you about other agencies that may be able to help. The following services are available to help you remain in your current property and keep your independence.

Adaptations

Adaptations are permanent alterations that can be carried out to your home to help you live your life as fully and independently as possible. These may include very simple things such as grab rails and ramps.

In some cases if we cannot provide suitable alternative accommodation then we may fit specialist walk in showers or stair lifts. Alternatively we can consider you for a move to more suitable accommodation.

If you are an elderly person or have a disability and think that you may benefit from having an adaptation made to your home, you should contact Derbyshire County Council Social Services office.  There are three local offices in the High Peak area:

Glossop – 01457 728888
Buxton – 01298 308000
Chapel-en-le-Frith – 01298 308100

There is a waiting list for adaptations.

Garden maintenance scheme

We operate a free Garden Maintenance scheme to help certain people with their gardens.  If you have a condition which makes you physically unable to look after your garden yourself and you do not have any family or friends within the High Peak who can do your gardening for you, then you may qualify for assistance.

Contact your neighbourhood co-ordinator for a leaflet and an application form.

Service standards – Garden Maintenance Scheme

We will…

  • Write and tell you whether or not you have been accepted onto the scheme within 10 working days of receiving your application
  • Start work on your garden within one month of approving your application
  • Cut your grass once per month between April and September
  • Cut your hedges every September

Care Link

Care link is a 24-hour helpline for older people and people with disabilities  who may need assistance day or night.  This service provides care and support at the press of a button.  If you ever have a problem and need help immediately, e.g. you become ill, or have a fall or an accident at home, you can get help by just pressing the button on your telephone unit or on your pendant.

A trained member of staff at our 24-hour call centre will answer your call promptly and they will get the help that you need.

Many of our flats and bungalows are already equipped with the Carelink System, but if you live in a house or would like the Carelink System installing, we can arrange to do this for a monthly charge.  We can also provide additional services known as Carelink Plus.  This includes help with shopping, preparing simple meals and household tasks.

 Service Standards - Carelink

  • Aim to answer all alarm calls within 60 seconds
  • Aim to visit you within 20 minutes of receiving an emergency call (if a home visit is the most appropriate course of action)
  • Ensure your alarm battery is checked annually
  • Ensure that if we hold a key to your property it is checked annually
  • Act immediately to any report of a fault on the alarm system and visit you every day until the equipment is repaired

The Telecare Services Association has accredited the service.

For further information contact Carelink on 0845 129 4877 and a warden will visit you to explain how the service works.

Painting Partners

If you are physically unable to decorate your home, and you have no friends or family locally who can help, you may qualify to have a room decorated under the Painting Partners Scheme. Contact your neighbourhood co-ordinator for more details.

Accommodation

To apply for accommodation please click on the Home Options logo opposite.
We also provide different types of accommodation to suit differing levels of need and independence:

Housing for elderly people

We have a number of flats and bungalows that are specifically for people over retirement age. All these properties have our emergency call system, Care Link, installed.  This means that residents can access help and support any time they need it.

Sheltered Accommodation

We also provide sheltered accommodation, which is housing that has been designed with older people in mind. All our sheltered accommodation is secure, self-contained and offers help and support whenever needed via our 24-hour emergency alarm call service, Carelink.  Some sheltered housing schemes have communal lounges, kitchens and laundries.  Some schemes also have social clubs that arrange trips out and other social activities.

Scheme Managers

A number of sheltered schemes have a scheme manager whose role is to provide housing related support to each tenant and to manage the smooth running of the building. They make contact with residents each day they are on duty by a morning visit or call using the alarm equipment.  Scheme Managers work 5 days per week and will answer calls when they are on duty in the building.  When they are off duty calls will automatically go out to our 24-hour Carelink control centre, where trained staff will be available to provide help and support.

The role of the scheme supervisor is to support and encourage residents living independently. They help residents living independently.  They will discuss your support needs with you when you first move in and at regular intervals.  With your permission they take a co-ordinating role and will sign post or refer you to other services such as home care, health services, social services etc.

The scheme manager also helps to develop the community within the scheme, helping with social events etc.

In Sheltered Accommodation with scheme supervisor we will:

  • Visit or call you every weekday (except Bank Holidays)
  • Provide help and support whenever the scheme supervisor is off duty via the 24-hour emergency alarm call equipment

The service has acheived the Sheltered Housing Code of Practice.

For further details on the different types of accommodation that we provide, contact your neighbourhood co-ordinator. To apply for a move to elderly person’s accommodation or sheltered housing, you will need to complete a Home Options application by clicking on the logo opposite.
